A gummy smile is when your gum-to-tooth ratio is out of balance when you smile. Individuals with a gummy smile will show excess gum, and their teeth may appear short as a result. A gummy smile can be caused by overactive upper lip muscles and genetics.
A gummy smile can be treated using muscle-relaxing injections. The injections target the muscles responsible for the excessive lifting of the upper lip. Once the injections have temporarily blocked the signals between the nerve and upper lip muscles, the upper lip lowers. As a result, covering the excess gum on show when you smile.
